         The Uva Province is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka. The province has an area of 8,500 km² and a population of 1,266,463, making it the 2nd least populated province. The provincial capital is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces.

History of Uva Provinces

       Establishment. In the 19th century Governor of Ceylon, Lord Arthur Hamilton-Gordon established the Uva province. Before that the divisions Bintenna, Wiyaluwa, Wellassa, Udukinda, Yatikinda belonged to Central Province and Wellawaya and Buttala belonged to the Southern Province.

            Nine Arches Bridge History of Popular rumours suggest that when construction work commenced on the bridge, the Great War began between the empires of Europe and the steel assigned for this site was reallocated to Britain's War related projects at the battlefront. As a result, the work came to a standstill, leading the locals to build the bridge with stone bricks and cement, but without steel, except of course for the rails and pins securing them.(Learn more...)

       Badulla History is Badulla was an isolated village until the British built roads from Kandy and Nuwara Eliya in the mid 19th century, as part of the growing plantation economy. By the 20th century Badulla had become a regional hub, with the British establishing it as the capital of Uva Wellassa, now known as the Uva Province. Badulla still has a number of British colonial buildings existing, including the Badulla railway station, St Mark's Church and the Old Welekade Market. Badulla district is one of the leading tea producing districts, second only behind the Nuwara-Eliya District.

The town has grown steadily since the country's independence from approximately 13,000 in 1946, to 38,000 in 1977 and 47,587 in 2011.

Badulla is a multi-national city with the ancient Muthiyangana Temple situated in its heart. The Catholic Church has a diocese headquartered here.(Learn more...)
